The Foundation: What is Our "Ideology"?

Every person has a set of core beliefs that guide their life—this is their ideology. In Shi’a Islam, our ideology is built upon five fundamental principles that shape our entire worldview. These principles are not just ideas to believe in; they control our actions, our feelings of love and hate, and provide us with strength and patience during life’s challenges. They are the lens through which we see the universe and our purpose within it.

How Do We Know God? Faith and Reason Work Together

Through Our Senses & Reason

By reflecting on the incredible order, complexity, and beauty of the universe—from the stars to our own bodies—our intellect logically concludes that such a perfect system must have a supremely intelligent and powerful Creator.

Through Our Innate Nature (Fitrah)

Deep down, every human being has an innate sense of a higher power. In times of crisis, hardship, or awe, this natural instinct to call upon a greater force for help surfaces. This is the internal call to God that exists within all of us.

The Core Beliefs: The Five Pillars of Shi'a Thought

  • Tawheed (Oneness of God)

This is the most important concept. We believe that God is Absolutely One. This Oneness means:
    • He has no partner, no equal, and no children. • He alone is the Creator, the Master, and the Legislator.
    • He alone is worthy of our worship.
    • The phrase "La ilaha illa Allah" (There is no god but Allah) is the foundation of everything.

  • Adalah (Divine Justice)

We believe God is inherently and perfectly Just. This means:
    • God does not oppress anyone; He treats everyone with fairness.
    • He will reward good and punish evil in a perfectly just way on the Day of Judgment.
    • His justice does not mean giving everyone the same thing, but rather giving everyone what they rightfully need and deserve for their spiritual journey.
    • Humans have free will. We are not forced to do good or evil; we choose our actions and are responsible for them. God’s knowledge of our choices does not mean He forces us to make them.

  • Nubuwwah (Prophethood)

God did not leave us to figure things out on our own. Out of His love and justice, He sent prophets to guide humanity. Their role was to:
    • Call people to the worship of the One God.
    • Teach divine knowledge and purify human souls.
    • Establish just laws and governments.
    • Be perfect examples of how to live a righteous life.
    • The final prophet is Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family), whose main miracle is the Holy Qur'an—an eternal, living proof of his truthfulness.

  • Imamah (Divine Leadership)

After the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), humanity still needed perfect, divinely-appointed guides to protect and explain the message of Islam. These guides are the Imams.
    • The Imams are the successors to the Prophet, chosen by God, and are infallible (protected from sin and error).
    • Their role is to explain the Qur'an and Islamic teachings correctly, lead the Muslim community with justice, and serve as spiritual guides.
    • The first Imam is Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him), the Prophet's cousin and son-in-law, followed by eleven of his descendants.
    • The twelfth and final Imam, Al-Mahdi (may God hasten his reappearance), is alive but in occultation. He will reappear before the Day of Judgment to establish global justice and peace.

  • Ma'ad (The Resurrection)

This life is not the end. We believe in a Day of Judgment when all people will be resurrected and held accountable for their deeds.
    • Belief in the Resurrection is a logical necessity of God’s justice (so the oppressed get their rights and the righteous get their reward) and wisdom (so that human life has a profound purpose).
    • This belief gives meaning to our struggles and motivates us to live a moral and purposeful life, knowing we will answer to a just God.
